My REAL Struggle With Acne (Before and After Photos Included)
My struggle with acne started when I was a teenager- I would pick and cry, hoping for it to go away or at least someday "grow out of it." I started taking birth control to help with hormones and it definitely helped, to an extent. Fast forward to the past few years (my early 20's), I've had hormonal acne here and there, but not nearly as bad as I had just a few months ago. When school/work got really busy around October 2017, I didn't even have the chance to pick up my birth control prescription refill... for two months! So, of course, my body reacted to this and I developed the worst acne I've experienced since being a teenager. I was so frustrated and tearful with what was happening to my skin and I didn't know where to turn. Fast forward to today, May 2018 and my skin has TRANSFORMED. It does not get any more real than the before and after photos below. Acne is such a common struggle for both men and women and I'm making myself pretty vulnerable by sharing these, but I think it's important to be real about it. You're not alone in this and there are many different solutions. My acne is mainly genetic and hormonal and everyone's skin is different, but I wanted to give some tips as to what really helped my skin the most. But first...
I KNOW. It was not fun to deal with. It was painful and I felt masked by the acne. The after photo is my skin today. It took about 1-3 months to fully heal.
Here are the top 3 things I did that saved my skin:
1. DMH Aesthetics
Laser work can be really scary, but if you live in LA, I swear upon DMH Aesthetics. This place is filled with the sweetest and most genuine staff that make you feel truly cared for. They did everything to get rid of my acne as soon as they could. I've been doing the Resurfx laser for a few months to decrease scarring from my teen acne, but once the acne came up again they had me sitting under the Light Stim and performed a Blue Light IPL laser that killed bacteria caused by acne. I did this once a week until the acne went away (probably about 6 sessions). Everyone has different pain thresholds, but it really didn't feel painful to me at all. For the redness and hyperpigmentation, they use Red Light IPL laser. I'm still currently undergoing the process to help with the scarring. Seriously, if you're in LA, go to DMH Aesthetics and they will take care of you.
2. Switching over to non-toxic products
Another great LA find: The Detox Market. I seriously don't know what I would do without this company! They sell such amazing non-toxic and all natural products with real ingredients. I went to their store in LA (you can also purchase anything online to be delivered) and I let their staff know what I was struggling with and they gave me a few samples to try at home. I immediately fell in love with their products. Here's an outline of what my HONEST everyday skin routine looks like, including products I was gifted that I also learned worked perfectly for my skin (I swear by every single product listed below):
Weekly Face Mask
3. Taking Evening Primrose Oil supplements
I was talking with my friend, Jules, about our struggles with our skin and she knew that I was really frustrated with my skin condition. So, she sent me this article that introduced Evening Primrose Oil Supplements as helpful for women's hormones and acne. I thought it was perfect so I immediately went to Whole Foods and have been taking them since.
That's it! It's A LOT, but all of the experimenting was worth it to me. I have come to accept that acne-prone is just the type of skin that I have and I do continue to have acne here and there, but now I know what works for my skin and I encourage you to find what works for you! xo
